The Chiropractor’s main modality is a joint manipulation procedure, which is typically referred to as an ‘adjustment’.
Once you have been thoroughly assessed and an in-depth medical history (related to the problem) has been discussed, your Chiropractor will be able to identify your needs and apply specific adjustments to your body. By doing this the Chiropractor gently moves joints and the surrounding soft tissue in an attempt to restore normal joint and soft tissue function. The adjustment may be accompanied by a pop or ‘clicking’ noise. This is normal, and is due to a release of gases (nitrogen) in the joint due to a sudden pressure change (negative) and is called a cavitation.
In addition to the adjustment treatment you receive at the clinic, you may be given advice and instructions for home treatment between visits. These treatments commonly include therapeutic exercises and/or stretches, mobilisation of soft tissue, diet recommendations and the application of hot and cold packs. All of which will be clearly explained prior to you leaving the clinic.

Sports Massage and Deep Tissue Massage largely overlap in their techniques. Ultimately, the intention of both is to restore the length and quality. As the name suggests a deep tissue massage consists of a therapist using firm pressure to manipulate the deeper tissues of the body, including the muscles. There are a number of reasons why someone might want or need this particular type of massage therapy, such as helping relieve muscular tension, reducing stress, breaking down knots, reducing the build of waste products and increase blood flow to the muscles. Deep tissue massage tends not to focus on a specific injury or one particular area of the body, instead of being administered as a full body massage or focussed on lower limbs or the upper body.
A sports massage differs from Deep Tissue Massage in it being more area-specific, focussing on larger and older knots that have built up over longer periods of time due to high training volume, trauma, muscle imbalance or poor biomechanics. The objective with sports massage is either to aid the recovery from injury, the prevention of injury or to assist performance through helping boost power production and the range of motion.

Is sports massage only for athletes?
Not at all. Sports massage can be an appropriate form of massage therapy for a large number of patients not undertaking any form of consistent exercise. For instance, patients sitting at a desk for long periods of time, or those working on low work surfaces, will also require the somewhat more specific tissue selection in treatment approach associated with a sports massage.

Can massage therapy be painful?
In order to achieve the desired effect, a certain amount of pressure is often required when administering sports or deep tissue massage. As such, it is not uncommon to experience a certain level of discomfort during treatment – especially when faced with a large build of tension in one particular area. This, though, is where the experience and exceptional communication of our therapists comes to the fore, helping you to achieve results without having to undergo too much discomfort.

Both remedial and relaxing massages are very therapeutic and beneficial. Depending on the individual and their current circumstances, a relaxation massage or remedial massage will be most suited. If you’re feeling stressed and exhausted a relaxation massage is going to be most valuable. If you’re experiencing general muscle tension and you're a not keen on a Deep Tissue or Sports Massage Therapy, then a remedial massage is going to be most beneficial. Your therapist will have a quick chat with you prior your appointment to establish your needs and recommend a specific style if you're not sure.

Relaxing massage:
This massage style aids with your mental and emotional health, as it calms the mind and settles the nervous system. Relaxation massage provides a general loosen up, encourages blood flow throughout the body, and helps boost the immune system by stimulating the lymphatics.
Relaxation massage is great for people who’ve had a stressful week/month, as it allows the body to catch up and recharge.

Remedial massage:
This type of massage is designed to treat both deep and superficial tissues. Remedial massage has a wide range of skilled techniques used to manipulate soft tissues. It can be used specifically for relaxation or to reduce pain and normalise the body's muscles and soft tissues.
People who will benefit from a remedial massage include anyone who is experiencing muscle tension and general aches and pains (lifestyle related)

Jonathan attained his Chiropractic degree from the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic (AECC) in 1994, having previously studied Physical Education at Victoria University, Manchester. His first professional practice was at Penzance and at Falmouth Chiropractic practices, later moving up- country to work in Weymouth and Wareham, and later still moving to work in Sydney, Australia.

Whilst practising there he was given the opportunity to teach on the Chiropractic programme at MacQuarie University, Sydney. From 1997 to 2021 he balanced teaching Chiropractic at Master’s Degree-level at AECC with private practice. Throughout that time, he also lectured to qualified manual-medicine professionals including chiropractors, osteopaths and physiotherapists throughout the UK and Europe, primarily in exercise and injury rehabilitation. Since 2021 he has been working almost exclusively in private practice, but maintains a role at AECC’s patient clinic.

Jonathan was privileged to be able to study spinal, extremity (limb-joint) and temporomandibular (jaw-joint) rehabilitation under many of the leading practitioners from Europe and the USA. Therapeutic exercises, combined with skilled manipulation and muscle release work, are his areas of specialism. He is also highly experienced in a broad range of treatment techniques from Shock-wave Therapy to Dry-needling (acupuncture-needle use) to supportive joint and muscle taping/strapping. He has worked with Southampton F.C. first-team as a consultant provider.

Jonathan has been married to Jane (a Chiropractic radiologist and ultrasonographer) since 1996, and they have two grown sons. The family enjoy a wide range of outdoor sports both in the south-west and abroad whenever they can.
